SWIM BUDDIES

Next, it’s good to find a swim buddy, or preferably several you can meet up with. It’s a fun challenge to take on with your friends, and then you’re not swimming alone, either. You can also ask any other winter swimmers you meet on the jetty, beach or poolside. Or team up with someone at the swimming club, if you’re lucky enough to be a member of one.

BE TENACIOUS

It can be hard to keep at it if you hit a few small bumps in the road and your expectations aren’t completely met. Small obstacles can often cause people to give up on their goals of, for example, shedding that extra weight or sticking with winter swimming. It is perfectly normal to experience some small setbacks along the way and skip a couple of sessions, maybe more. You should not consider these a defeat, but rather a pause; you shouldn’t stop winter swimming just because you missed a week or two. The body remembers the cold shock for a very long time, as brutal as that sounds, but that means that you won’t be starting again at square one. Instead of giving up, arrange to meet up with your swim buddy again. Until winter swimming has become part of your lifestyle and habituation occurs, you’ll need to plan and be tenacious.
